These mid 20th century shields are somewhat difficult to come by as
Queensland Aboriginal culture was quickly
decimated by pastoralists (prime sugarcane and cattle grazing land in
much of Queensland), as well as missionaries who banned traditional
culture and language.
This rare,
large, colourful and beautifully decorated
Fig Tree shield is particularly special; the natural pigments are all
present whilst the shield displays good signs of use. The handle has
a nice glossy patina, and fits comfortably to the hand unlike many purely
decorative shields often made more for the art market rather than for
indigenous use.
